  • How to protect your system from Ransomware?

The first-ever Wannacry Ransomware hit in India was 12th May 2017 destructing the data of approximately 100 and 500,000 systems globally, mainly focusing on Healthcare systems in the USA. There has been a lot of cases like this in Europe also.

Ransomware and cybercriminals are involved in malware economy by encrypting your files, documents, pictures or audio from your device.

WHAT IS RANSOMWARE?

Ransomware is a smartly designed malware that restricts your access to data by encryption. Now to open the encryption you will need a code and for that, you need to pay the ransom.

There are two types of Ransomware

Encryptors- It has advanced encryption algorithms specifically designed to block access to user’s files, documents, pictures, and audio. It demands money in return for the key that is needed to decrypt the blocked data.

Locker- It is the same as encryptors but with a slight difference that it does not encrypt your data but rather locks it. It also needs a key to unlock the data and for that key cybercriminal demands ransom money. There are some versions of Lockers that infects the MBR (Master Boot Record). MBR is a place where your computer’s hard drive is. It helps your system to boot up. When MBR ransomware hits your system it blocks the bootup process and as other ransomware, it also leads to a pop up with a note on your screen demanding the ransom money.

WHY IS RANSOMWARE GETTING A LOT OF ATTENTION?

  • It sets unbreakable encryption that means you cannot decrypt your data on your own. Although cyber-security does provide a few tools to solve this problem. Some of them are AVG, CERT Polska, Kaspersky Lab, Eleven Paths. P.S. They are free.
  • It has the ability to encrypt everything you have on your computer including images, videos and audios too. I know pretty scary right?
  • It scrabbles your file's name so that you cannot know which one of your files is affected.
  • It can spread to other devices through the local area network.
  • It creates an illusion so that some of the anti-viruses do not recognize it.
  • It targets devices geographically so that the reader gets the ransom note in their native language.

SAY A BIG NO TO THESE THINGS:

  • Don’t save your data ONLY on your PC. Create 2 backups of your data both external and internal. You can save your data on iCloud or Google drive.
  • Turn off macros in Microsoft Office suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. on the computer.
  • Do not open spam e-mails or e-mails from unknown senders.
  • Remove plug-ins and add-ons from the browser.
  • Do not download attachments from spam e-mails or suspicious e-mails.
  • Never click links in spam e-mails.

HOW TO GET BACK YOUR DATA WITHOUT PAYING RANSOM?

The number of Ransomware is increasing day by day but the cyber-security is only setting its eyes on decryption but the sad part is they are also unable to do it. The shadiest of them are proving unbreakable so far. Although cyber-security did crack some crypto wars which were not well coded. The main solution to this problem is to use the ransomware decryption tool.

FINAL WORDS

Decryption tools become outdated after a period of time because of the updates and new enhanced versions released by cyber-criminals. This is a never-ending process so it is better that you encrypt your data and keep multiple backups.
